If an era comes when AI judges people, would you feel at ease?
I recently watched the near-future film MERCY: AI Trial, which depicts a world where AI takes on the roles of judges and prosecutors to pass judgment on human beings.
At first, I went in thinking, “Surely this is a bit far-fetched.”
But it drew me in far more than I expected.
The story is set in a near future where violent crime continues to rise.
Amid growing public opinion that human trials are influenced by emotions and bias, a new judicial system is introduced—one in which AI delivers strictly data-driven judgments.
However, the police officer who helped promote this system suddenly finds himself on the other side of it, standing as a defendant after a certain incident.
And unless he can prove his innocence, he faces execution—an extreme and desperate situation.
What makes this film compelling is that the opponent is not human.
The protagonist must lower the AI-calculated “probability of guilt” within a limited time frame.
This premise creates intense suspense, raising even the viewer’s heart rate.
AI has neither emotion nor prejudice; it approaches conclusions through probabilities derived from vast amounts of data.
That is precisely why it also suggests the possibility of trials with fewer mistakes than those conducted by humans.
If your own probability of guilt were quantified by AI—
how would that make you feel?
