「いつでもある」とは限らないんです

時々いらっしゃるお客さまで、

「ちょっと前に見たアレが欲しくてきました」

とおっしゃる方がみえます。

詳しくおうかがいすると、実は３年ほど前の商品だったりします。

そのときは、

「申し訳ありません、その商品は完売していて、メーカーさんでもすでに生産終了なんです」

とお伝えするしかありません。

そうお話しすると、多くの方が「えっ、そうなんだ」と驚かれます。

きっと「お店には前に見たものが、ずっと並んでいる」と思っておられるんですよね。

でも今は、昭和のような「同じものを大量に長く作り続ける時代」ではなくなっています。

コロナ以降、とくにヨーロッパの靴メーカーさんは

・作るアイテムと量を絞る

・シリーズごとに作り切ったら終わり

という流れがぐっと強くなりました。

車やカメラでも、そして旅行などのサービスでも、人気のあるものは「予約して待つ」のが当たり前になっていますよね。

すぐに手に入るのは、いわゆる「いつでもある前提」で売られているコモディティ商品です。

おさだウイズ店で扱っている靴は、そういった“コモディティ”とは少し違います。

一年ほど前からセレクトして、ようやく届いた靴たち。

数も限られていますし、「なくなったら同じものをすぐ追加」というわけにはいきません。

メーカーさんの生産体制を考えると、「一回きりの出会い」のような商品ばかりです。

だからこそ、

「いいな」と感じていただいたときが、その靴との一番いい出会いのタイミング

だったりします。

先日、久しぶりにご来店くださったお客さまは、レディースで26.5cm。

一般的なお店では、まず店頭には並んでいないサイズです。

おさだウイズ店では、そうしたサイズの方にも「いつ来ても一足はちゃんと提案できるように」と思い、リスクを承知で仕入れて在庫として大切に置いてきました。

その靴をお出ししたときに、

「これ、残ってた品ですか？」

と言われました。

お客さまに悪気はなかったと思いますが、、、、、

ただ、お相手した青木は

「この方のようなおみ足のために用意しておきたくて、確保していた一足なのになぁ…」

と、とても残念がっていました (T_T)

お客さまからすると、「来れば、いつでも自分のサイズがあるお店」と思ってくださっていたのかもしれません。

それ自体は、ありがたい評価です。

でも現実には、イレギュラーなサイズを在庫として持ち続けるのは、かなり綱渡りでもあります。

こうしたことがあるとつい考えてしまいます。

「イレギュラーサイズは、在庫として持つよりも、お取り寄せを基本にした方が、お互いに誤解が少ないのかもしれないな」と。

もちろん、「いつ来ても何かしら提案できる店」でありたい気持ちは今も変わりません。

ただ同時に、

・限られた生産量

・追加がきかない現場の事情

も正直にお伝えしながら、

「これはと思った靴に出会えたときは、ぜひ前向きに検討していただけるとうれしいな」

と思うおさぴーです。

「いつでもある」時代ではないからこそ、

一足との出会いが、前よりちょっと特別で、大事なものになっている。

そんな風に感じていただけたら、とてもありがたいです。

“It’s not always just sitting there waiting for you.”

From time to time, we have customers who say,

“I came because I wanted that pair I saw a little while ago.”

When I ask in more detail, it turns out that “a little while ago” was actually about three years ago.

In those cases, all I can say is:

“I’m very sorry, but that pair is sold out, and the manufacturer has already discontinued it.”

When I explain this, many people are quite surprised:

“Oh, really? It’s already gone?”

I think a lot of people imagine that “the shoes they once saw in the shop are always still lined up there.”

But today is no longer like the Showa era, when the same product was mass-produced for a long time.

Especially since COVID, many European manufacturers have clearly shifted to a different style:

• They limit the quantities they produce
• Once they’ve produced a series, that’s the end of it

The trend in that direction has become very strong.

It’s the same with cars and cameras, and even with travel services:
for popular items, it’s now normal that you reserve and then wait.

What you can get “right away” are mainly so-called commodity products that are produced and sold on the assumption that “they’re always available.”

The shoes we carry at Osada With are a little different from those “commodities.”

They’re pairs we carefully selected about a year in advance and finally received.

Quantities are limited, and it’s really not possible to “just reorder the exact same shoes as soon as they’re sold out.”

Given how manufacturers organize their production, many of these shoes are really more like “once-in-a-lifetime encounters.”

That’s why,

the moment you feel “Oh, I like these,” is often the very best timing for you and that pair of shoes to meet.

The other day, a customer came in for the first time in a while.
She wears a women’s size 26.5 cm.

In a typical shoe shop, you simply don’t see that size on the shelves.

At Osada With, we’ve been deliberately taking the risk of buying and keeping such sizes in stock because we want to “always have at least one pair we can sincerely recommend” to customers with feet like hers.

When we brought out a pair that would really suit her, she said:

“Oh, is this just something that was left over?”

I don’t think she meant anything bad by it.

But Aoki, who was looking after her, felt very disappointed and thought,

“This is the one pair we’d been keeping on hand especially for feet like hers…” (T_T)

From the customer’s side, she may have been thinking,
“This is the shop where, if I come, they always have my size.”

And in itself, that’s a very flattering way to see us.

But in reality, continuing to hold irregular sizes in stock is a pretty difficult balancing act.

Of course, our desire to remain “a shop where you can always find something we can recommend” hasn’t changed.

At the same time, though, we do want to be honest about:

• The limited quantities being produced
• The reality that we often can’t reorder the same thing once it’s gone

And with that in mind,

when you happen to meet a pair of shoes that makes you think, “Yes, this is it,”
I’d be so happy if you would consider them positively at that moment.

Because we no longer live in a time when “things are always available,”

each encounter with a pair of shoes has become a little more special,
and a little more precious than before.
